      I appreciate that. It has been pointed out by other below that I used the English pronunciation, rather than the more accurate Spanish pronunciation. As the speaker is supposed to be an Italian, I am not aware of how it would have been pronounced there in the 19th century. If I was ever to reproduce this story, I would probably make an adjustment and settle on the modern Spanish. I am however interested as to how Poe pronounced it; whether he did so the English way or not, being an Anglophile as he was? Bare in mind that the Spanish pronunciation is actually to end with a suffix -tho, rather than -do(e).

    At a time when modern poetry seems to have gone the way of (the worst of) modern art, the works of Poe are perhaps ironically refreshing; this was a fine thing to listen to on a gloomy, overcast Sunday. What further elevates the quality of Poe's distinctive poetry, however, is the emotion you put into the narration. Poetry especially is not done justice by simply reading it from the page and you do much to convey the pain, anger, melancholy, mystery and much else in the applicable works. The art, in turn, further compounds this; even the most innocent of images has an undeniable, Poe-esque sinisterness to it, and lastly, as ever, the quality sound and music in the background, all combining to a greater whole than could ever simply be read. Thanks as well for the dedication, perhaps it's apt that mine was the one with the monster and screaming.

      I think that is a really great way of expressing it. And, you are welcome! I am mad keen on the Gustave Doré, who I first encountered in a Bible (which I was scared to death of) and then in an illustrated version of 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' (which I now, happily, have a copy of). So it seemed that art in the style of Doré was just what this collection needed. As always, I am very grateful for your support and to read what you have to say.

    I read this story about thirty years ago, I'm guessing, and it gave me a great scare. I've never forgotten the scratching nails of the terrifying beast trying to get in the secluded cabin. The terrifying cries of the mysterious black hairy beast missing it's tail and demanding it back...I can still feel the terror creeping down my spine as a scared little boy unable to sleep in the dark corner of my bedroom. I love this story

    Recipe *Fudge/Brownie Pie* These are US measures as I do not know the metric system. I'm an American right 1 stick butter softened 1 cup white granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 Tablespoons cocoa powder or more for richer taste 1/2 cup all purpose flour Nuts optional pecans/walnuts (I like pecans) Cream together butter, sugar. Add eggs mixing well, then add ALL ingredients Grease 8 inch pie tin or glass ( I use spray oil in a can) don't forget this part or it may stick Hand mix & the more it is mixed the more cake like it will be. Like a brownie Cook 350 degrees til done or when the edges & center start to crack. Test w/toothpick in center & it may be gooey if that is what you want it to be take it out of the oven. It will be crispy round edge & soft in the surround. Enjoy w/ or w/out ice cream on top🥧🍽

    (Spoilers to follow, scroll back up if you haven't finished.) Didn't realize I'd put so much swearing in this story, though I dare say it's appropriate for the situation the protagonist finds himself in. An excellent reading and video as ever Huw, it's a quizzical thing indeed to hear your usual talents applied to one of my own tales, partly because it brings out elements and interpretations that I never considered myself whilst writing and editing it; the voice of the man on the train for example, you lend him a fine degree of creepiness, more so in his human guise than in the moment when the monster slips through. I think he'll also resonate more with anyone whose ever had to deal with 'that one commuter' before. It might just be my interpretation as well, but the background sounds seem quieter than usual, giving the impression of the everyday world being that much further away for the ill-fated Matt. The subtlety of the visuals works well too, methinks. Ninety percent is just the everyday world at night but there's a delightful creepiness just below the surface... until its proper time has come, at least. The tone of the night is never entirely natural and it's also a curious thing just how unnerving the smiling face of a young woman becomes when the context is proper. Thanks as well for the shoutout at the end, I've tried to spread the word for this tale and your channel these past few days, I think there's a few more places I can do that so I'll see if I can't rustle up a few more watchers. (I would write the recipe of my favourite pudding but I'd probably be sat here for two hours trying to decide which one was my favourite.) Was good to work with you once again. I'll try not to take two years to come up with another story next time. Thanks again.

    Everyone craves company and a sense of belonging, and death and the dead are notoriously acomodating in these regards. Your narration makes the protagonist sound remarkably sane, which might be expected from a protagonist who contrives his own story from whatever happens to be to hand, perhaps. I've not read this story before and, by HP Lovecraft's standards, it seems a remarkably human and ever-so-slightly relateable tale; how the mind is tempted to drift back to childhood adventures and the impressionable mind which could well believe that supernatural entities await in nature, promising adventures which offer release from homework and the cleaning of one's bedroom... or, in later life, soulless employment or the looming threat of financial ruin or the like. How tempting against that, for some, might even the tomb become? (That's not a somewhat-subtle confession, rest assured.) What might a mind do if it grabbed such a notion tightly and didn't let go? Then again, this is Lovecraft so perhaps this is a tale of eldritch corpse-destiny. In any case, I like how your narration is mostly calm and buisnesslike until comes a moment of stress or dread or bacchanalian rhmying... and then it very much isn't. There seems to be a proper subtlety about the visuals and background sounds as well this time, though that was some fine creepiness right at the end, it must be said. Nice, nice and thrice nice.

    • @TheBlackDogChronicles
      @TheBlackDogChronicles Месяц назад

      I like your insight on this one, particularly on the humanity that Lovecraft expresses, in his character's desire to be removed from it. I don't know whether you know, but Lovecraft's father (a travelling salesman) had a nervous breakdown and was committed to an asylum for five years, where he eventually died (from suspected neurosyphilis) and his Mother too, perhaps in part to their sudden impoverishment, suffered increasingly with ill mental health. Because of this, it is claimed that she harangued the young H. P. Lovecraft for his physical appearance, intensifying in him a belief he was too ugly for polite society. With this knowledge in mind, I can't help reading this story in the dim light of his deep sense of rejection and his dependence on his writing friends who helped to sustain the impetus for his stories. Like his wonderful story 'The Outsider', we are left at the end of the story with more empathetic tragedy than consciousness-crushing Cosmic horror. There are many moments when the narration almost craves (under my reading of it) to find the freedom to cry out, "This is what I am. Do not leave me alone on the path in which I can see only darkness."

      I am really glad that you enjoyed it. This is based on a (very much adjusted) real-life experience, so I am thrilled that you liked it.

    Great presentation but as with most Shirley Jackson stories I always feel as though Im missing something 🤷‍♂️. Have no idea how the witch fitted in with the story.. Or the old man. 4/10 for the story 10/10 for the reading and production

      I've got a couple more Shirley Jackson stories to come. I hope they satisfy more. As to this story, I think we are supposed to postulate who among the speakers best assumes the title. But, I might well be wrong on that. :)

    Love the whole thing. I've both read and heard this a few times. I think it's one of my favorite Lovecraft tales. Thanks from Michigan, USA. Well done, as always.😱

      One of the challenges of having to stick to writing that is within the public domain is that the subject-matter can be a little-bit worn out, with how many paths have been tread over it. If we have in some small way freshened the journey, that makes me feel content. :)

      I am very grateful for your thoughts. Initially, I was not happy with my original attempt at the soundscape, so I spent a day improving it and adding various elements. I ended up working up to about an hour before it was time to upload it!

      I am hoping it is because The Black Dog Chronicles wrapped you up in a spell of enchantment and drew you into its own, dark little world, where everything is uncertain and new adventures await. ;)
